Strain of The Month: Granddaddy Purple

Written and photographed by Annie McVay

Granddaddy Purple is a #strainofthemonth designed to impress the senses, especially considering the fruity and sweet floral notes. From nearly a foot away, you can still smell this glimmering nug like a fragrant indica flower. Granddaddy Purple has surprisingly bright green, dense nugs, yet goes through the grinder smoothly, further releasing the distinctive and delightful aroma. The plethora of crystals sparkling in the light and the bunches of orange pistils make this strain an absolutely stunning sight to behold.

From local family farm Cannassentials, Granddaddy Purple is the outcome of Mendo Purps and a Skunk and Afghanistan crossover. The top terpenes of this indica strain are linalool and limonene. Also found in birch bark and lavender, linalool is known for creating a floral aroma and promoting a calming and soothing effect. Linalool may also help encourage decongestion, a perfect boost to the immune system when the pollen levels rise dramatically in spring. Interestingly enough, linalool is found in over 200 plants, and even those who do not use cannabis can consume over two grams a year.

Originating in the flower’s resin glands, limonene creates the other half of this strain’s particularly fruity and citrusy aroma. Limonene is also found in juniper, lemon rinds, and orange rinds and contains mood enhancing and anti-anxiety properties. Lab studies of high doses of limonene have also discovered many anti-cancer characteristics, causing tumor cell death in breast, lung and brain cancers. Along with antifungal and antibacterial properties, limonene can even help with gastric reflux and heartburn.

After a long day of running errands, scrambling to finish applications, and writing essays, Granddaddy Purple is the perfect way to unwind. This strain is delightfully delicious and smooth to smoke, whether using a piece or rolling a blunt with the roommates. At a THC level averaging around 22.95%, this is a hard-hitting strain for those who don’t smoke often, so please use your best judgment. However, this is not an anxiety inducer, as all your worries simply melt away. Perfect for enjoying some Cards Against Humanity with friends, this is a great strain to have on hand for any 4/20 celebration. Even smoking alone, Granddaddy Purple makes any comedic or creative activity much more engaging and enjoyable.

Granddaddy Purple is available from Cannabis LLC, located at 1936 Main St, Springfield, Oregon. Accessing the parking lot is a breeze while driving West on Main street, and inside the store is divided into two halves, so even in the era of COVID-19 customers can admire interesting glass pieces and other odds and ends while disinfecting and waiting their turn. The budtenders here have charming personalities and provide exceptional customer service. Whether you get the Granddaddy Purple or prefer a different strain for this spring, you will be in good hands at Cannabis LLC.

Strain of the Month: Lemon Flufuns

written by Emma Routley

Feeling the lack of motivation to do anything while in quarantine?  Lemon Flufluns will be your cheerleader for encouragement!

Lemon Flufluns takes a few puffs to show its effects, especially if you already have a high tolerance. With 16.0% THC and 11.08% CBD, the strain qualifies as a 1:1. While that THC percentage might not look high, you’ll certainly notice how calm and focused you feel after consumption.  Although there isn’t much information online about the new strain just yet, it’s one worth asking your dispensary about!

The sweet, sticky smell of the bud is comparable to the pollen you’d usually be outside sneezing from around this time of year.  After consumption, a mellow feeling of zen followed by a light high will gear you up for whatever task is at hand.  Working on any assignment during these uncertain times can feel frustrating, but not after consuming Lemon Flufluns.

This strain will get you excited about whatever’s right in front of you, whether it be homework, social media, cooking or more.  Be careful though: distractions are most definitely welcome during this high and your focus might shift onto other things if they’re shiny enough. Look out for leaving the stove on! If you take a bathroom break you might get sidetracked by what’s in the mirror and forget all about that mac and cheese.

If your back hurts from sitting around all day with nothing to do, the CBD in Lemon Flufluns will help banish the physical ailments from your body while the THC goes to work on opening up your mind.  Getting along with the people who have been on your nerves while in quarantine will be a breeze. Zoom classes and meetings will feel more like a social event than something you’re required to do.

With a healed body and fresh perspective, Lemon Flufluns will welcome different ideas and deep conversations with the people around you.  Or, if you have no one, phone calls are a great idea.  Suddenly the mundane existence of quarantine will seem stimulating and exciting! Hopefully you prepared ahead of time and have snacks in your household, you’ll need them once the munchies kick in.

The downside is that Lemon Flufluns doesn’t fade away slowly.  You’ll suddenly realize you’re back in the reality of your life.  However, just knowing Lemon Flufluns is out there to take care of you again will help you feel like everything’s going to be alright.

Strain of The Month: Chocolate Chunk

written by Skyla Patton, photographed by Kimberly Harris

As an avid lover of chocolate (my fifth grade class photo was taken in a shirt that said “I love chocolate!” with a stain from a Hershey’s bar on it), my heart just about jumped out of my chest when I first heard of the strain Chocolate Chunk. A direct descendant from Afghani, this pure Indica strain from TH Seeds has a classic earthy aroma with hints of woodiness and sweet cocoa.

Chocolate Chunk mirrors it’s namesake with rich colors and a decadent sweet smell from seed to smoke. This lush dessert is not to be truffled with (get it?) and is best saved for the later hours of the day, making it the perfect strain for a good night of sleep… or a good night of not sleeping.

The real outstanding feature of this chocolatey bud comes from it’s relatively low levels of THC. Ranging at a low of around 10% to a high peak of 22% THC, the potency for Chocolate Chunk is significantly less than the intense, high-level strains that are flooding the dispensary shelves these days. While a little known fact, high levels of THC can actually inadvertently negatively impact your “freak in the sheets” goals.

A preclinical study determined that THC can block the release of GnRH, more commonly known as the production of hormones like testosterone, and while the science is less known for the ladies, it’s also considered to have similar impacts on estrogen. Along with this, there have also been connections between higher levels of estrogen, like during ovulation, and incredibly heightened sensitivity to THC.

Whether you’re a stoner in the sheets or tend to keep your cannabis out of the bedroom, it might be worth trying a strain like Chocolate Chunk for some good ol’ fashioned experimentation. The smooth blend of low-level THC and a classic aphrodisiac like chocolate is sure to lead up to the midnight romping (or sleep) of your dreams.
The relationship between our endocannabinoid system and our hormones is a closely intertwined one, and while there are plenty of people who love the high headspace during intimacy regardless of the intensity, it’s worth trying a low-potency strain like Chocolate Chunk while experimenting in the bedroom.
