High Recommendations: Papers + Ink and the “Art of Rolling”

Written and photographed by Lily Brennan

I don’t know about you guys, but when I want to celebrate 4/20 I want to make it feel special. When you’re an everyday cannabis consumer it can be difficult to find just the right thing to make your holiday stand out from any other smoke sesh. I’ve finally discovered the cure for my own desires and added some spark to the process, and I’m stoked to bring you guys along the way. Papers + Ink’s Rolling Paper Kits adds a bit of color, fun and sophistication to your regular routine, perfect for celebration.

Papers + Ink Studio is a BIPOC female led collective with a mission to create products for the sophisticated smoker, rebranding rolling papers through the lens of the Art of Rolling™. “Tired of outdated stereotypes that didn’t reflect who we are,” the founders of Papers + Ink state, “we created the products that didn’t yet exist for us.” And that’s exactly what they did. With just a quick glance of their website, you can find sleek flameless lighters, ornate glass ashtrays, and even a cute little “nug sweeper” in the shape of a toy car. However, they’re most known for their Rolling Paper Kits, ethical and cruelty-free patterned rolling papers.

Inspired by travels, vintage textiles, botanicals and the occasional collaborator influence, Papers + Ink currently carries sixty-two unique patterns. They even have the option to order custom prints as well! What I’ve selected for myself to review are their prints Lukas Shrooms, an adorable cartoon print of the classic toadstool mushroom; Tie Dye Fantastic, exactly what your hippie dreams could imagine; and Party Plant, a colorful spackle of marijuana leaves – perfect for a 4/20 celebration.

When purchasing their Rolling Paper Kits you have two options to select from. First is their $28 Full Kit, consisting of 15 “queen-sized” rolling sheets, 15 premium filters, a bamboo packing tool, and even a How-to-Roll Guide. Their second option is then a $14 Mini Pak, consisting of 5 “king-sized” rolling sheets and 5 premium filters; perfect for sampling without a commitment. Both have sheets made with organic unbleached hemp rolling papers which are then printed with non-toxic vegetable based colorings. No matter the choice, you’ll be delivered a package with items of the highest quality.

It would be an understatement to say I was waiting eagerly for my package of goodies to arrive in the mail, and was pleasantly surprised when my papers came earlier than expected and in beautiful condition! As soon as I opened up my Papers + Ink haul I could tell just by its packaging that this experience would be vastly different from using any old papers you’d find in a store. It says a lot about a company when they take the extra time to design packaging that is unique, sturdy and individualized to the brand. The presentation alone made me feel like the “sophisticated smoker” they were advertising towards.

The papers themselves are incredibly smooth to roll with, made out of paper that glides together effortlessly. I especially found their lack of creases a huge bonus, something I’ve personally struggled with other papers in the past. The Full Kit seems like a perfect purchase for rolling beginners, as it gives you all the tools you’ll need for a successful roll! Still a little nervous? No worries, as Papers + Ink even includes video tutorials on how to use their kits on their website.

I’m incredibly impressed with the prints as well. Vegetable-based inks are usually difficult to achieve vibrant colors, but Papers + Ink have nailed their dyes for their consumers. Mixing their Mini Paks gives you the option to sample and explore all these colorful patterns they’ve designed. You’ll be impressed as soon as you open their high-end packaging, and set your eyes on patterns that look identical to what they advertise on their website. And, of course, the prints look really cool while lit too.

Overall, I recommend Papers + Ink’s Rolling Paper Kits if you’re looking for papers on the more luxurious side. These papers will wow newbies, veterans and anyone in between. They’re the perfect gift for a friend, a treat-your-self purchase, or 4/20 celebration. You can catch me purchasing from them every year as fun patterned rolls become a new tradition in how I celebrate the stoner holiday.

High Fashion:  The Nike Strawberry Cough Dunks

written and photographed by Alice Yeager

In 2010 artist Todd Bratrud released the legendary “Skunk Dunks.” A Nike SB adorned with purple and green suede to imitate the look of a fuzzy nugget of purple kush. The shoes came equipped with a stash pocket in the inner tongue and soon earned legend status by Nike heritage enthusiasts. Ten years later, Todd Bratrud created a sequel to the iconic Skunk Dunks: Strawberry Cough Nike Dunks SB. The delayed release created even more of a feeding frenzy by Nike collectors.

“The Strawberry Dunks was supposed to be a spiritual successor, and it was supposed to be released on 4/20 of 2020. But because of COVID they delayed it because the whole coughing strawberry motif seemed to be a little insensitive at the time,” said Skyler Rose, who has been collecting sneakers for the last 10 years. Skyler was lucky enough to get his hands on the new Strawberry Coughs that were finally released a year later, in October 2021.

The shoes are a colorful explosion of smooth red leather and fuzzy cannabis-green suede. Much like their grandfather Skunk Dunks, they also include a stash pocket inside the inner tongue. They also include some new details, such as a leaf shaped layer near the collar and a stitched in physical coughing strawberry on the heel. The shoes themselves are a statement, with multiple textures and muted and vibrant colored paired in sync.

“The strawberry dunks are just one of those legends of a shoe,” said Skyler. Just as Strawberry Cough is a legend of a strain.

The smell of fresh strawberries is truly the signature of the energetic potency of the strain. The colors of the shoe match the palette of the classic Sativa strain perfectly. The Strawberry Dunks are a super limited release with a lottery system used to win a chance to buy the pair.

“Since they were postponed, we didn’t know if they would actually be released. You know when they ended up getting canceled the few pairs that did end up making it out were going for thousands and thousands of dollars. So having that unicorn of a shoe was enticing, not because of the price point but because of how uncommon they are,” said Skyler. “Plus whenever they have such a good themed sneaker with history it’s just so appealing. It might be wild to wear a strawberry on your foot but I like taking things that are a little weird and making them work.”

Todd Bratrud and Nike hit it out of the park with these cannabis inspired kicks. We can only hope in another ten years we’ll see yet another revival of the classic Dunks (but it would be nice if we didn’t have to wait that long). If Nike is taking suggestions, Blue Dream, Purple Haze and Durban Poison would all perfect homages to cannabis heritage.

Strain of The Month: Critical Cure

Written and photographed by Siena Dorman

Featuring an unusually pleasant ratio of CBD to THC, the Critical Cure strain has calming, low-key psychoactive effects that can be enjoyed for many reasons. Critical Cure generally offers an 80:20 CBD-THC ratio which is ideal if you’re looking for something to spark relaxation, calm emotional stresses or feel inspired while tackling a creative activity.

In Eugene, this indica strain can be found as a preroll with about 11% CBD and 6% THC, which makes Critical Cure the perfect portable smoking option. The effects of Critical Cure seem to take a bit longer than other THC-heavy strains; this creates a subtle high that you can naturally ease into.

The aromas of Critical Cure are modest and smooth and it has a largely nutty flavor, with a bit of a light fruity taste. The burn is smooth and does not overwhelm the senses.

For anyone who experiences chronic muscle pain, this strain will be excellent for a bit of assistance. Your muscles will start relaxing as you enjoy Critical Cure and you will find sharp pains begin to dull out. If you like to practice activities like yoga and meditation, this strain will help you focus in and listen to your body’s natural impulses to stretch. The relaxing effects of this strain do not impair your own motivation to move around. The high CBD content makes moving your body feel really good and it may seem like your body knows exactly where it needs an extra stretch.

The head high of Critical Cure is calm. You may feel motivated to take on a task (without feeling too many psychoactive effects) or you may be more encouraged to hang back and read a book. The versatility of Critical Cure allows your own intentions to take the wheel. You won’t feel pulled to do anything in particular, just feel lighter doing what you please which is a nice alternative found in CBD forward products.

This strain is helpful for many kinds of cannabis users, but it is notably great for those who occasionally feel heightened anxiousness with weed use.

Opt for Critical Cure when you’re not looking for a strong head high. This CBD strain is a problem solver and can be the perfect strain to start a smoke session with. The calming and medicinal effects will set you up for a pleasant and dynamic high when paired with stronger THC strains.

Aries (March 21st- April 20th)

Aries, there will be a small change that will seem chaotic or stressful to you, like maybe your favorite budtender leaving or your favorite strain disappearing, but don’t get too strung out over it. Instead, go with the flow and embrace this new change and break your old routine by trying something new like an edible or concentrate.

Fall Tarot Card: The Tower (distress, adversity, disgrace)

Taurus (April 21st- May 21st)

Taurus, now is the time to splurge on something you’ve always been curious about. Perhaps it is a bit more in price or THC content than you’re used to, but as long as you’re comfortable you should reach out for that special something. If you’ve never tried it, try getting a pearl and watching a spooky movie.

Fall Tarot Card: Three of Wands (effort, discovery, strength)

Gemini (May 22nd- June 21st)

Gemini, if you’ve been feeling stuck lately take a chance and trust the recommendation of your favorite stoner. Have they been raving about a certain strain? Does your budtender swear by this harvest’s Blue Dream? Now is the time to get out of your funk and find out what all the ruckus is about.

Fall Tarot Card: The Chariot (providence, triumph, chance)

Cancer (June 22nd- July 22nd)

Cancer, when you find yourself feeling dull and worn out from your usual 420 routine, consider taking T-break and cutting out or lower your THC consumption. Taking a T-break can help you ‘clear the fog’ you’ve been stuck in lately and heighten your next experience when you want to reintroduce THC again.

Fall Tarot Card: Knight of Wands (absence, departure, flight)

Leo (July 23rd- August 23rd)

Leo, when you want to treat yourself to something new, think about trying an activated beverage. These drinks can be a great way to experience the modern advances of the cannabis industry and if you’ve ever wondered what a canna-twist on drinks like lemonade, soda, and beer taste like, bring it up to your favorite budtender.

Fall Tarot Card: Temperance (moderation, frugality, economy)

Virgo (August 24th- September 22nd)

Virgo, remember that the transition from summer to fall is harder for others. If you’ve been feeling slightly depressed or sluggish, try a fruity sativa like Grapefruit. You can also try doing activities in sunlight and exercising, like smoking a joint after an autumn walk or hike.

Fall Tarot Card: Nine of Swords (disappointment, despair, sluggishness)

Libra (September 23rd- October 22nd)

Libra, if you are ready to try something stronger than your usual THC treat, maybe it’s time to try concentrates. In my experience, concentrates made from OG strains are usually easy to find in the fall time, but this can change from harvest to harvest, so ask your budtender what they recommend next time you stop in on Shatterday.

Fall Tarot Card: The Emperor (power, stability, reason)

Scorpio (October 23rd- November 21st)

Scorpio, this fall I recommend trying out more indicas. You’re in need of that calm, peaceful feeling that indicas are famous for producing. Now might also be an excellent time to get into making art or carving a jack-o-lantern. My personal favorite indicas have always been in the Kush family, mostly because there always seems to be fun combinations. Maybe you can try a few out and find a new favorite.

Fall Tarot Card: Four of Wands (harmony, peace, prosperity)

Sagittarius (November 22nd- December 21st)

Sagittarius, this season you should spend your time diversifying your cannabis palette. One easy way to do this is to take advantage of gram specials. Now is a good time for you to settle on a favorite dispensary, or at least take this as an excuse to branch out more in your consumption habits.

Fall Tarot Card: Three of Swords (removal, division, dispersion)

Capricorn (December 22nd- January 20th)

Capricorn, for this spooky season, I recommend experimenting with mild or low THC strains like R4 or Charlotte’s Web and focusing on mindfulness. But if you are thinking about trying more than one strain out this fall, try and keep a journal about your favorite CBD strains and how you interact with them.

Fall Tarot Card: Eight of Cups (mildness, joy, modesty)

Aquarius (January 21st- February 19th)

Aquarius, as someone who tends to be off in their own world, I would suggest at some point this season using a canna-bath bomb. Especially if you find your thoughts being more tangled than usual. Taking a nice canna-bath can give you time to mull things over and treat sore muscles.

Tarot Card: Ace of Swords (love, triumph, excessive)

Pisces (February 20th- March 20th)

Pisces, this fall is a time for you to return to your roots. For many of us, this means smoking a joint. This could also be a good time to go back to your first favorite strains if you’re feeling nostalgic. Whatever brings you back to your favorite moments, and if you haven’t learned yet, try rolling your own joints or carving your own apple pipe.

Fall Tarot Card: The Hierophant (tradition, alliance, goodness)

Strain of The Month: Cantaloupe Haze

Written and photographed by Noah Noteboom

As you sit in your room listening to the rain hit the roof, you find yourself craving something to do. With the weather taking a turn for the worst, staying indoors is probably a good idea. Autumn gives us the opportunity to huddle around the fire or catch up on those movies we have stashed away for rainy days. But movies like Hocus Pocus, Good Will Hunting or The Nightmare Before Christmas can only provide entertainment for so long, before you need something else to do.

That is where our Strain of the Month comes into play. Cantaloupe Haze (also spelled as Cannalope Haze) takes the honor this month. Although low in CBD, this flower more than makes up for it with earthy smells and a higher concentration of THC.

This indica-dominant strain is a mix of Mexican and Haze Brothers to create a blend of cannabis that is meant to uplift the spirits and soothe your mind. Cantaloupe Haze can be a sweet relief from the seasonal sadness that often comes with the change in weather.

The fruity flower has a very potent aroma. The smell of flowers and tropical sweets romance you, and the earthy nugs have a similar taste as well. As you indulge, you can taste hints of sweet and sour melons along with a slight whiff of pine in the aftertaste.

With THC levels ranging anywhere from 20-28%, use caution when smoking this strain. It is recommended that newer users consume smaller doses and with lots of patience to avoid couch-lock. As with most indica strains, the amount you intake has a direct impact on the weight of the effects. Smoking just the right amount will make getting things done a breeze. But be careful, because if taken in excess, this strain will leave you feeling sleepy and unmotivated.

Especially in the current condition of the world, Cantaloupe Haze offers a big morale boost. Quarantine will feel a little less claustrophobic and a bit brighter with this mellow, productive strain guiding you through the day.

Chugga Chugga, Let’s Get Trainwrecked: Strain of The Month

words by Skyla Patton

School has arrived with a bang, and suddenly we’re waist  deep in the craziness of fall term. Deadlines, new classes and the scramble for time has everyone feeling overwhelmed. Week two and already we want to retreat to bed waving a white flag. Don’t worry, it’s not time to burn your syllabi and throw in the towel yet. Relaxing with a half gram of hybrid is a great way to ease your mind and take a well-deserved break: Trainwreck is here to take you away.

Famous in the marijuana world, Trainwreck is a tasty, sativa-heavy hybrid that lives up to its name. Almost instantaneously, a  euphoria of motivation and uplifted energy hits you (you guessed it, like a train). This insta-high is a unique quality that is not typically found in most hybrids. Trainwreck is the bubbly love child of Afghani indicas and Thai or Mexican sativas.Their happy marriage creates a powerful high that can sustain you through those deadlines while steamrolling any extra stress or tension. This strain is ideal for a cool autumn walk, spicing up date night or adding inspiration to a creativity sesh. Trainwreck is pretty much a big snuggly hug  — are you sold yet?

A Northern California native, this hybrid has an earthy, almost minty aroma with a slight hint of lemon. At first glance it may just look like your average bud, but a microscope will reveal fiery orange stigmas (the little fuzzy hairs) and deep specks of purple hidden close to the stem. Trainwreck is highly renowned for its incredible uplifting qualities and is often used to treat PTSD, common anxiety or chronic pain.

The high will allow you to relax and forget your worries without totally incapacitating you to your netflix— unless that’s where you want to be. It also is known to help with a lack of appetite or stomach nausea. Be prepared for the after effects, though: this strain burns quickly and effectively for a long-lasting high. Reports say that once the euphoria trickles away, you will be ready for pajamas and the best nap of your life.
