When I stopped by Oregrown for a gram of something fun, I couldn’t help but be drawn to the summer-in-a-jar that is Gogurtz by Herbal Dynamics: a hybrid sitting at nearly 29% THC that’s guaranteed to turn a bad day around and make a good one great! Full disclosure: one of my favorite strains of all time is Herbal Dynamic’s Z85 because of its uplifting, not heart-racing, euphoric yet relaxing, stoney high. So when I smelled its grandbaby and recognized that same fruity gas combination I love, I knew that it would be a contender for strain of the month. I say grandchild because Z85’s parents are Zkittles and E85; Zkittles also fathered Runtz, and Runtz is Gogurtz’s dad, giving both strains the Zs in their names and a body high that’s equal parts relaxing and rejuvenating. What makes Gogurtz so fun, and gives it the GO part of its name, is the zippy little something it gets from Cap Junky, making it great for gaming, socializing, and watching movies!
If you are looking for the perfect summer night this month, suck down a Gogurtz and hit the movies with a friend. After I took a delicious bite of Hapy Kitchen’s Blue Dream Chocolate Cookie, a friend called with an extra ticket to Obsession. Normally, I am not one for horror movies, but after a bong rip from Gogurtz, I felt brave and headed over to Metro Cinemas. For the connoisseurs, the smoke is smooth with a blueberry nose and a robust grassy gasoline body; for the casual enjoyers, it’s an easy hit that doesn’t induce harsh coughing fits and has that quintessential sweet skunkiness that even Grandma knows is the good Devil’s Lettuce. The predominant terpene in Blue Dream, myrcene, is also what gives Gogurtz its feel-good body high, something I was very grateful for once Obsession got rolling; an exciting buzz that’s not paranoid. Curry Barker’s psychological thriller was exactly what my brain needed to chew on while my body was immersed in the sour-sweet contradiction of relaxing by going to a terrifying film that induces full-body chills for over an hour. Inde Navarrette’s performance as Nikki Freeman added a whole new layer to the experience with her insane portrayal of the female psyche under the duress of toxic masculinity, something my friend and I discussed at length upon coming back to mine to smoke the rest of the Gogurtz.
When layered over the course of an evening, the farnesene and myrcene in Gogurtz act as a great social lubricant, making deep, honest conversations easy and enjoyable. When Leafly.com says Gogurtz is talkative, what they really mean is it’s straight-up truth serum. The trauma-bonding from Obsession and the dissolution of inhibition from Gogurtz led to unexpectedly beautiful, vulnerable conversations that, for once, I didn’t regret the next morning. When the creepy crawlies I got from Obsession were hit by another round of Gogurtz, that energy converted into giggles, and we suddenly found it necessary to put on a rom-com. Thus, dear friends, this strain-of-the-month accidentally led to the greatest doubleheader since Barbenheimer: Obsession x 13 Going On 30. Hear me out!
Beat the summer heat by hiding out in the AC at Metro Theater, and let Inde Navarrette amaze and disgust you. When you greet downtown again, wondering if you need to throw up, how one person could do that to another, and if there is any hope for love left out there in this scary world, load a bowl of Gogurtz and pop in the ultimate rom-com to laugh it off! As someone who had never seen 13 Going On 30 before (ironically, because I had to grow up too fast), I now totally understand why it’s been everyone’s 30th birthday theme for the last few years. Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo dazzle, bringing to the forefront a frightening consideration: would your 13-year-old self be proud of how you have lived your life? If it weren’t so cute and funny, 13 Going On 30 may actually be more unsettling than Obsession! Maybe it was just the Gogurtz talking, but my friends and I were making all sorts of crazy connections between the two films, which opened my mind to the deeper social commentary in both. Not only are both of the basic premises a handsome brunet who uses what he thinks is a cheap wish gimmick to make the girl of his dreams love him back, but they also both caution the snowball effects of small choices and ultimately, to be careful what you wish for.
On that note, I think I’ll leave the wish-making for the movies and get my magic from my favorite flower. And this month, that’s Gogurtz: the best of both worlds!
